What do you do with an ever-expanding tool supply in a small apartment already packed to the gills? Answer: toolbox side tables. I found two of these locking file cabinets on Craigslist and loaded them up with all my tools and paint.
For the smaller tools, I divided the drawers with Ikea’s Antonius basket insert. It’s amazing how much you can fit in these little file cabinets. And they look kind of industrial modern too, n’est-ce pas?

I love it that you have a mallet. Every one needs a good mallet. Mine is wood, but I can see the advantages of rubber or plastic… I use mine to smash small metal things and turn them into brooches.

Very industrial modern. Plus, I really like the idea of having the tools but an arm’s reach away while lounging on the couch….

What a fun use of a mallet, Sheila! I’d love to see your brooches. I usually just hammer paint cans closed with mine.

Really? You must start smashing things… you might start with a mini Jello mold…

I am going to look for free file cabinets on craigslist right now! We are having the same problem in our little apartment. Combine that with the fact the our preschooler is obsessed with all things tool related and is constantly getting into our tools, it is quite a mess. If I find only ugly ones, perhaps I’ll have to do something like this… http://http://modpodgerocks.blogspot.com/2009/03/project-of-week-29-continued.html
Thanks for such a great idea!
