I picked up these drawers on Freecycle. They were salvaged from the kitchen of a 1940s house that was demolished. My original plan was to put the drawers on wheels and use them as under-bed storage. Turns out, no two drawers are the same height, which would look janky. So I tried stacking them vertically instead (anchoring them to the wall, of course). You could also hang these drawers as individual shadowboxes.
Supplies
Tools
1. Fill the drawer-pull holes with wood filler. Let dry. Sand the rough edges and vacuum off the dust, then paint one coat of primer.
2. Paint the outer sides one color. I used Ralph Lauren Aged Mint (IB25).
3. When dry, paint the inner sides the other color. I used Infinity Edge of Wedgewood (no longer available). To achieve a clean edge where the two paint colors meet, pull your paintbrush toward the edge. No taping necessary. Let the paint dry for several hours.
4. Measure and cut the decorative paper to fit in the bottom of each drawer.
5. Insert the paper to make sure it fits. Trim as necessary.
6. Paint a layer of glue onto the wood, then place the paper on top. I found it easier if I poured a thin line of glue onto the surface, then spread it with my paintbrush. Flatten the paper with a brayer or your hands. Smooth out the air bubbles before the glue sets. Let dry.
7. Then spread another layer of glue over the top of the paper. Wipe off excess glue on the sides before it dries. Let dry.
8. Affix each drawer to the wall with a drywall screw. Pre-drill into studs or use a drywall anchor or molly bolt.

I love these! Can I buy them from you?
What a great idea for a portable bookshelf. I also love the fact that you can arrange them at all different heights and/or use them to display items by hanging them on the wall.

Hey these are sharp! you could take a longish one and with a couple of mounting brackets or even just with a bit driver and a stud finder mount them to the walls with a fancy handle intact for a different look too.
I love seeing something cool like these cause it gets the brain working on about 100 different inspired ideas!

what a clever idea, I love it! such an innovative way to make something unwanted into something useful, plus you can coordinate it with your colour scheme and re-paint at a later date if you get bored with that colour!
I love freecycle and use it all the time, such a great way to keep furniture and other household goods out of landfill.

[...] Craftynest posted all about how to turn these old drawers from a kitchen remodel into a modular bookcase. How great is this? I love your blog! I just had to comment because you used the word janky. :) I think it might be a Bay thing, because now that I live in Cleveland no one says it, and I get funny looks.
That made my day.

This is an awesome idea!!
I have some old drawers from my MIL that aren’t attached to anything and just collecting dust at the top of our cabinets in the garage. Just the other day I was staring at them wondering what we would do with them or how long it would take us to finally throw them in the trash.
Now I don’t have to!
I love the idea of the bookshelves and the shadowboxes. I have quite a few so I could actually do Both!

This just looks sooo fantastic, I absolutely love them! I was actually searching for bookshelf ideas when I found you. Both my 9yr old and I are voracious readers and have tons of books with no storage space for them. And I actually recently used my mother’s old dresser drawers to set up her backyard garden. I put the two long drawers and two short drawers on blocks in the back yard so she could have a neat little controlled area for her tomatoes, herbs and such. Now I regret not thinking of this idea before I did that.
I’ll be on the lookout tho and I’m DEFINITELY bookmarking your site. Thanks for being here maam!

Love this idea. I’m going to have a “go” at it and plan to use it in our kitchen for a craft storage. I will have some drawers available soon and will look for more in the trash :) I might incorporate it with the other project you have “Craft/tool station with wall organizer” …trying to decide which one I should do or maybe can do both!!

[...] In case you have old drawers lying around or can get some on a garage sale you can give them a new life. The classic way is to renovate them and turn into an under-bed storage or use as shadow boxes. Although you can also be more creatie and make a good-looking modular bookcase of them. This isn’t the easiest project but the result can be very impressive. Check out full instructions with photos of the process on Crafty Nest. [...]

I have COMPLETELY run out of space in my tiny little OLD house! I am an avid crafter and could not figure out how to organize all my “stuff.” I live in an old neighborhood and I CONSTANTLY see old furniture on the side of the road. Now I will be the one to go and pull all of the drawers out so I can begin to organize. THANK YOU a million times for such a wonderful idea!
